San Diego Comic Con is around the corner. For The first time in seven years Christian Alzmann Studios will not be attending.
We will very much miss our loyal customers, who every year stopped by our booth to say hello, as well as the amazing community of artists we are fortunate enough to call our friends.
Have a great Comic Con everyone. We hope our paths will cross again soon.
I will be in the Christian Alzmann Studio booth, (#4916), signing the copies of Tales and Battlemilk 3. On Saturday 7-20 I will be in the Design Studio Press booth (#1701) with the rest of the Battlemilk artists from 2-4 signing Battlemilk 3 and then from 4-6 signing Tales.
With a big assist from Anne Fisher Gonzales, all the writing for "Tales: The Art of Christian Alzmann" is done and edited, including a very generous foreword by the uber talented Aaron McBride and an afterword by legendary Iain McCaig. It is now in the capable hands of Design Studio Press and off to the printer. A big thank you to Anne, Aaron and Iain as well as Dylan Cole, Shelly Wan and Dan Dos Santos for their blurbs and Scott, Tinti and Ceci at DSP for holding my hand and getting me to this point.
Here is a sneak peek at the tutorial section. If interested you can pre-oder from Amazon.
Big week. All the images for "Tales; The Art of Christian Alzmann" have been sent to Design Studio Press so they can do their publishing magic. We are just a few months away from taking delivery of my first book. Crazy! Here is a sneak peak. Please let me know what you think. Link for the book is here:
Tony Mcvey has been sculpting for more that 35 years and has worked at ILM, Disney and Jim Henson Productions to name a few. His work can be seen in Star Wars: the Phantom Menace, The Dark Crystal and Superman. He is one of the old school sculptors I admire so much.
I am honored that Tony was inspired by a sketch of mine and is going to producing a very limited (15) run of " Poot" sculptures. Please contact Tony for more information. You can reach him at ajmcvey@aol.com. And make sure to check out his blog and site
I'll be at Comic Con in San Diego next week at my booth, #4916, and as part of the ILM Art Department booth, #2913, in the Lucasfilm area. I'll have some new prints at my booth and at the ILM booth we'll have Ralph McQuarrie art on display along with art from the past 35 years of ILM. All 4 of our VFX Art directors will be on hand for demos and a panel on Art Direction Friday July 13th in room 7AB from 1-2pm. So please stop by and say hello!
Huge thank you to Andrew, Murray and Simon for another great Semi-Permanent. I am always honored to be asked to speak but feel like I am the one who finds so much inspiration from the other speakers and participants. Congrats on ten years and keep up the amazing work.

If you were unable to attend, i believe you will be able to check out the speakers at the semi-permanent link sometime in the future. Great stuff!
The image is from the demo I did the YooBee Design school in Auckland. Big thanks to them for having me.
ILM has made a memorial for Ralph in the store window at work. Artists from ILM, Pixar, Lucasarts and Lucas Animation have contributed pieces to put in the window. This is round one of two. My little contribution is in there too.
A few years ago I got to sit and chat with Ralph McQuarrie in the Lucasfilm archives while looking at Ralph's work. I told him that he was one of the biggest inspirations in my life to make me do what I do. He said " I hear that a lot" : ) It really was the only honest response. He touched so many people with his art and considered the work its own reward. He was so humble and so greatful for everything he had. A real inspiration to me in every way.
Last Saturday I was invited to give a workshop on a creature design workflow. Talking and working, both together are kinda difficult. Much respect to all of the art teachers everywhere.
Starting with a Photoshop sketch, modeling in Sculptris, rendering in Modo then some paint in Photoshop. The result is a bit rough, cause of all of my gabbing, but here it is.
I have been invited to speak at Massive Black's San Francisco Workshop in November. Looks like it should be really cool and I am looking forward to it. For more info click the link.
A piece I did last week as a gift for my niece. I guess the message is that its fun out there... and dangerous, so please be careful while being carefree.
Thank you for another great Comic Con. This was our 4th year and it is so good to see familiar friends and faces as well as new ones at the booth. Have a great year everyone and see you at the next con.
BTW Here is the latest print we were selling this year.
